Hot Tub Time Machine 2 – A Wild Ride Through Time (and a Whole Lot of Bad Decisions)

Imagine this: you’re lounging in a hot tub, enjoying a few beers with your buddies, when suddenly, the tub transforms into a time machine. Sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s the premise of “Hot Tub Time Machine,” and it’s a premise that absolutely delivered on the promise of raucous, hilarious fun. But what happens when you try to recreate magic? Does “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” live up to the original movie’s legacy?

The answer, like so many things in life, is complicated. “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” is not a perfect film, and it struggles to recapture the sheer raunchy magic of the first. But hey, let’s be honest – perfect sequels are rare as hen’s teeth. On the other hand, “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” isn’t a complete disaster either. It throws enough wild ideas, zany characters, and laugh-out-loud moments your way to keep you entertained. Whether you’ll love it or hate it is ultimately a matter of your own personal taste and how much you enjoyed the original.

The Time Traveling Troubles of Adam Yates

The sequel picks up a few years after the events of the first movie, with Adam Yates, our time-traveling protagonist, facing a pretty rough patch. He’s lost his job, his girlfriend, his friends (well, one of his friends), and his hot tub time machine. He’s practically a walking, talking emotional dumpster fire.

But, just when you think things couldn’t get any worse, they do. Adam gets drafted into a bizarre new time travel adventure after the original hot tub spontaneously combusts, sending him hurtling through time with his estranged daughter, Lou, and a new band of misfits. This group includes a cocky, self-absorbed “future” Lou, who is obsessed with technology and social media, a flamboyant, over-the-top character named Nick, and a quiet, but secretly brilliant, scientist named Adam Jr.

Back to the 80s (Again)

Their destination? You guessed it – 1989. Not wanting to repeat the mistakes of the past, Adam Jr. tries to steer them away from the hot tub, but Lou’s social media obsession leads them right back to it, kicking off a new wave of time-traveling hijinks.

This time around the characters are more aware of the consequences of messing with the past, and the consequences are even more drastic. Think a world where Michael Jackson never existed, or where a certain President was never assassinated. The film explores the butterfly effect, but perhaps not as effectively as some might hope.

The Good, the Bad, and the Just Plain Weird

“Hot Tub Time Machine 2” hits the comedy mark with moments that will have you laughing out loud. The jokes are still raunchy, often bordering on the absurd, but there’s a certain charm to their silliness, particularly if you enjoyed the first movie.

The problem with the sequel lies in its reliance on formula. It feels as though the writers checked off every box from the original film, giving us a similar plot, similar characters (though with some new additions), and similar jokes, albeit sometimes more outrageous. The script can feel predictable, and some of the jokes just don’t land.

The film’s pacing can also be a bit inconsistent. Some scenes drag on too long, while others feel rushed, which adds to the overall sense that “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” is trying too hard to be funny.

An Unlikely Heart (and a Lot of Beer)

Despite its flaws, “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” manages to hit a few emotional chords. This is thanks, in no small part, to the relationship between Adam and Lou. It’s a messy, complicated relationship marked by misunderstandings, resentment, and, ultimately, a deep love for one another. Their journey through time allows them to confront their issues and learn to understand each other better.

The film is also a reminder that even though we might have regrets about the past, it’s the decisions we make in the present that shape our future. It’s a message that resonates with every time traveler, even those who haven’t actually traveled through time.

Time Travel is a Two-Way Street

In the end, it’s up to you to decide if “Hot Tub Time Machine 2” is worth your time. It’s not a masterpiece, but it’s certainly entertaining if you’re looking for a wild ride through time. And if you’re a fan of the original “Hot Tub Time Machine,” this sequel is a must-see, even if it’s just for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

So, grab a cold beer, settle into your favorite couch, and get ready for a wild ride. Just don’t expect too many big surprises.

P.S. If you’re looking for a truly great time travel comedy, a trip back to the first “Hot Tub Time Machine” is always a good idea!
